Lexus combines mobile, TV for youth awareness

Toyota Corp.’s Lexus is raising awareness for its 2012 RX F Sport during the season finale of prime-time ABC drama “Revenge” by offering viewers additional content and a chance to win a vacation package via Yahoo’s IntoNow mobile application.
The automaker’s dual-screen contest connects viewers to custom content related to the Lexus RX on Apple and Android devices during the live showing of the last two Revenge episodes of the season. Users also have the chance to win a Lexus-sponsored weekend getaway inspired by the TV series.
“Social TV connects with young, affluent consumers who are hard to reach, but are embracing mobile platforms and acting as influencers,” said Nancy Hubbell, prestige communications manager for Lexus [2], Torrance, CA.
“Being a leader and dominant player in the mobile space further delivers Lexus’ promise as an innovative and progressive brand,” she said.
Revenge is sweet
More than 80 percent of tablet owners use devices while watching TV, per ABC and Yahoo.
Lexus is tapping smartphone and tablet users to leverage its 2012 RX F Sport model during the two remaining episodes of the current season of Revenge.
Episodes will air Wednesday, May 16 and Wednesday, May 23 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. Each episode is one hour.
Viewers must install the IntoNow app to interact with the show via their mobile devices. IntoNow uses SoundPrint technology to automatically identify live television content.
When the episodes begin, smartphone and tablet users who tag Revenge with the app can view content and enter to win a contest presented by the Lexus RX F Sport.
Users can enter to win a week-long stay at an oceanfront vacation home in the Hamptons, New York, where Revenge is set.
Revenge contest promotion
The vacation will take place during the week of July 4 and includes lodging, roundtrip airfare for two, more than $16,000 in prize money and a rental car.
In the app, viewers can also share opinions of the show on Facebook and Twitter, answer show trivia, follow real-time Twitter feeds of the Revenge cast and crew and access additional information and videos related to Revenge.
TV tie-in
Earlier this season, Lexus positioned its 2013 GS model in Revenge during a one-minute scene that tied loose ends in a subplot.
The show’s premise is that protagonist Emily Thorne returns to the town she grew up in to get back at the people who destroyed her family. Each episode centers on her findings with a slew of subplots.
Lexus GS in Revenge
In the May 2 episode, the Lexus GS appeared for approximately one minute during the last 15 minutes of the show. The vehicle is a gift to a character who is hesitating to accept a job offer (see story [5]).
The automaker will not integrate its RX vehicle on-air during the last two episodes, but hopes to enhance its product placement with a content and contest sponsorship, per Ms. Hubbell.
Rather than a traditional television commercial, Lexus seems to be attempting to reach young, female viewers by aligning itself with an entertainment source.
Lexus could reach tech-savvy aspirational consumer by sponsoring the IntoNow mobile content.
In addition, it is likely that Lexus will extend the reach of this partnership with Revenge via its social media channels.
Previously, the automaker shared the news that the GS would appear on “Revenge” May 2 via its Facebook [6] and Twitter [7] accounts.
“The Revenge program adds value beyond the 30-second ad and builds on the partnership Lexus has with ABC and this show,” Ms. Hubbell said. “It encourages deeper engagement with the audience and the characters in the show.”
